"Build habits around your goals."

Coach Chris Rangel did not start out as someone who would dedicate a decade of his life to coaching. He started out as a college athlete who, like a lot of former athletes, found that life after sports had a way of undoing the fitness he had built. After college, the weight came on. The habits slipped. The discipline that had once been built into his schedule was suddenly up to him to maintain, and it was harder than he expected.

Then he stumbled across the CrossFit Games on ESPN.

What he saw on that screen was not just impressive. It was a window into what human beings are capable of when they train with intention. It changed his perspective on what his own body could do, and it pointed him toward a new path. He found a CrossFit gym in Riverside, California, fell in love with the methodology and the community, and in 2014, after watching what a great coaching environment could do for people, he decided he wanted to be part of building one.

More than ten years later, he still is.

Chris is technical without being rigid, exacting about movement quality, and genuinely fun to train with. Clients would describe a session with him as one where they actually learned something, felt pushed, and laughed at least once.

Chris holds a CrossFit Level 1 and Level 2 Trainer certification, a CrossFit Weightlifting Certificate, a CrossFit Gymnastics Certificate, a CrossFit Nutrition Certificate, a Birdbox Coaching Development Certificate, and a CrossFit Judges Course credential valid through 2026. His depth of CrossFit-specific education is among the most extensive on the Blue Eagle coaching staff, and it shows in every session.

His specialty is weight loss and nutrition, and what that means in practice is helping people build the habits that make lasting results sustainable — not just attainable. The biggest mistake he sees people make is inconsistency, or more precisely, the belief that motivation alone can carry them through. Fitness is not a feeling. It is a practice. And the athletes who succeed are the ones who stop waiting to feel ready and start building a lifestyle around their goals.

The result he is proudest of has nothing to do with the scale. It is the moment he watched an athlete string together their first double unders. If you have never experienced that particular victory, it is hard to explain. If you have, you know exactly why it stays with him. It is the kind of moment that reminds a coach why the small wins matter as much as the big ones.

Outside the gym, Chris has been married for 19 years and spends his time outside doing what comes naturally to him: hiking, camping, and being in open spaces. He brings that same energy indoors — direct, grounded, and focused on the person in front of him.

His message to every new athlete is the same one he has carried since the day he started coaching: build habits around your goals. Not motivation. Not willpower. Habits.
